Mattress Size Guide
The right mattress size for you depends on your body, your bedroom, and who's sharing the bed with you. Getting this right matters just as much as the mattress itself. Even the best support system won't help you sleep well if you're cramped, or if the mattress overwhelms the room.
Choosing the right mattress size
A few things worth thinking about before you buy:
- Who else is in the bed regularly: a partner, a child, a pet?
- How tall or heavy are you, and how tall or heavy is your sleeping partner?
- How much space will you have in your room once the mattress is in?
Every Tattersfield mattress is made by hand in New Zealand. Because of the compressible materials we use, finished mattresses can vary by 1 to 2cm from the sizes listed below. This is completely normal, and the measurements here are intended as a guide.
Tattersfield mattress sizes
- Single. Our smallest mattress size, suitable as a first bed or an occasional guest bed.
- Long Single. The same width as a Single with extra length, making it a practical option for a growing child or teenager who needs more room to stretch out.
- King Single. A step up in width from Long Single, giving older kids and teens more room to move at night. Also a solid choice for a guest room with limited floor space.
- Double. A compact option for smaller rooms, offering enough width for one adult or a teenager who wants more space than a King Single.
- Queen. The most common choice for couples, and generally the minimum size we'd recommend for two adults sharing a bed.
- King. More width than a Queen, giving couples extra room to move without disturbing each other.
- Super King. Our largest standard size for couples, with generous space for two adults plus room for a child or pet to join in.
- Californian King. Our biggest mattress, at over 2m wide. Best suited to larger bedrooms and families who need the extra space.
Measuring your room for a mattress
Before you choose a mattress size, measure your bedroom and think about how your bed will sit within it. A bed that's too large for the space will feel cramped no matter how comfortable the mattress is, so match the size to your room as much as to your sleep needs. Frequently asked questions
What are the mattress sizes in New Zealand?
The common New Zealand mattress sizes are Single (91cm x 188cm), Long Single (91cm x 203cm), King Single (107cm x 203cm), Double (137cm x 188cm), Queen (153cm x 203cm), King (167cm x 203cm), Super King (183cm x 203cm) and Californian King (203cm x 203cm).
What's the most popular mattress size in New Zealand?
Queen is the most popular mattress size in New Zealand. It's compact enough to fit most bedrooms, while still giving two adults enough room to sleep comfortably without feeling cramped.
Is a Double mattress big enough for two adults?
A Double bed is technically big enough for two adults, but it probably won't be comfortable for regular use. A Double mattress can fit two people side by side, but it's tighter than most couples will enjoy, since everyone needs a bit of room to move and sprawl overnight. We generally recommend Queen as the minimum size for two adults sharing a bed. A Double still works well for a guest room, a single adult, or a teenager who wants more space than a King Single.
